Washboard Wilma & The Unkool Hillbillies
"Washboard Wilma & The Unkool Hillbillies play a kind of 1930's old-time country, ragtime, hillbilly, rockabilly music which defies description and almost beggars belief. At times it sounds like something from the cowboy pictures at the backdrop to dodgy poker games and hich-kicking girlie shows in crowded western saloons. But then a Jerry Lee Lewis (Anders Umegard) pushes his way through to play some ferocious rock'n'roll to give the whole thing a kick forward into a different era. Overall the group is a bit of a shock to the system - but one thing is for sure, I'd go out of my way to see them." Now Dig This
"Having never heard of Washboard Wilma and the Unkool Hillbillies, I thought I was in for a dose of western swing hillbilly bop, but I was pleasantly surprised to hear that they play a rousing selection of rock and roll with a great boogie woogie piano cranking out on top of the songs. The vocal duties are shared by Wilma and her piano player, Anders Umegard. The songs never take themselves too seriously and with a band name like the Unkool Hillbillies you know that the lyrics are going to be injected with a sense of humor as well. Sure enough, what we have here are ten fun songs that almost have a vaudeville-ian feel to them and you almost expect to visualize a stage show to go along with the fun toe-tappers Washboard Wilma & her Unkool Hillbillies have to offer. This band turned out to be a good surprise that I would highly recommend checking out if you have the chance. Good 50's influenced rock and roll in the Jerry Lee Lewis style of rock!!"
