Last Great Rockabilly Saturday Night
Amazing obscure Rockabilly. Classic stuff! This has got to be one of the best ever compilations of obscure Fifties Rockabilly. Hi-fi it ain't - so what? It starts off with an absolute CLASSIC of fifties Rockabilly - Don Willis' 'Boppin' high school baby'. With wild vocals, crashing drums and guitar and pumpin' bass all swimming in slap-back echo, this track is the epitome of fifties rockabilly. It was originally on the Satellite label (not the same one that changed its name later on to Stax). This is followed by one of rockabilly's wildest vocalists - Mickey Hawkes. I saw this guy in London during the 90's not long before he died, and he was WILD. Goodness only knows what he was like on stage in his youth, but his tracks here are testaments to wild, runaway music. Whilst not all of the tracks are (or could be!) as wild, there are some excellent examples of other tunes that have been popular in clubs over the years, such as Hoyt Johnson's 'Eenie meenie minie mo', Jimmy Evans' 'The joint's really jumpin' and Andy Anderson with 'Johnny Valentine'. And so it goes on! This is an amazing CD of Fifties rockabilly, and comes with our highest recommendation. Don't forget, there's a volume two...
