Nervous Records 45 rpm Collection
Nervous Records was one of a handful of specialist independent record companies which emerged early on in the British Rockabilly boom at the beginning of the 1980's. Many of these labels disappeared due to their reluctance to move forward when such bands as The Meteors and The Ricochets began to take Rockabilly into a new direction. Proprietor Roy Williams enthused about these new bands, and Nervous Records has thrived throughout the Eighties and into the Nineties with many of the top Psychobilly and Rockabilly bands appearing on the label. Most of the Nervous catalogue is made up of albums, but there have been a number of 7-inch and 12-inch singles - particularly in the early years - many of which are very collectable. Howard Raucous ca.1996
45rpm ? 'What the hell were they ?' I can almost hear my children say when they read this. Yes, this compilation is a startling Nervous Records reminder of several things, not least the way that the industry has moved on in recent years. The vinyl single is virtually unheard of these days compared with the heyday of early Psychobilly, when it was actually worth a label's while releasing these things. Good things, as they say, come in small packages, and there was often a magic about the 45rpm which some still treasure today. Here we find a veritable treasure chest of spearheading acts from Nervous Records, who shaped the movement in its formative years. All this on one CD! (which I think was previously available on Anagram records). All the classics are here, but without the scratches! The Polecats 'Rockabilly Guy', which was the label's first ever release as well as their haunting second single 'Marie Celeste'. The Deltas' brilliant 'Heart Attack' - the early 80's were full of these great tracks. Restless' 'Edge On You' is another good example of how the 45rpm seemed to be able to capture the excitement of those times. Other bands featured include Frenzy, Torment, The Sharks, Rochee & The Sarnos and more. 25 tracks in total. Deathrow Database #33
