The Very Best Of Restless

Finally Nervous released the first best of album from the legendary Restless. Like always on Nervous the cd includes a wonderful booklet with many photos of the band. On this CD you can find all the classic hits which made Restless so popular with Psychos and Neo-Rockabillys like Bottle on the Beach, Ice Cold, Baby please don't go, Edge on You, Long Black Shiny Car. There are lot of great cover versions like New Orleans (live at the Big Rumble with a very powerful sound), Poor Mans Prison (Gene Vincent), New Girlfriend, Radar Love (Golden Earring), Old black Joe, Memphis Tenesse, Tobacco Road and Modern Romance. Other songs are Just can't take it (Beat my drum), Somebody told me, How can I find you (Kicking into Midnight), Ghost town (live, taken from the Live'n'Kicking), Dark Blue Sea (After Midnight) and the pop song Just an Echo (Figure it out). Finally it's a good choice of songs they put on this cd. Keep on rockin' and buy it at Nervous. Review written by : Alex Wunsch, Ratingen, Germany

"This is a compilation of the Restless songs over their career. Restless are one of England's most popular bands and play good rockabilly in a Polecats style. Most of these songs are studio recordings with a few live tunes thrown in. Restless' best material is definitely their older songs as the newer ones get more experimental and poppy. If you have never heard Restless, this is probably not the best release to start off with as the styles vary depending on when the songs were recorded which gives the CD less musical focus than if you got one of their full lengths. With that said... If you are already a fan of Restless I'd definitely suggest picking this one up asap." The Psycho Avenger

".... and played on a decent system instead of in the car, it was just like going back to the gigs of c1981. Long Black Shiny Car (always my favourite), Bottle On The Beach...awesome. Contrary to my opinion in the car, this CD really is the next best thing to travelling back in time to see them live, and in fact 'New Orleans' is like being there. Love it to bits" Bobby - The Shakin' Chefs

"Here we have another tasty platter served to us from the folks over at Nervous Records UK. This time around we're checking out Restless 'The very best of Restless'. Upon placing it in the CD player and hearing the first few frenzied notes of 'ICE COLD', I knew I was in for another good ride. This combo, hailing from East Anglia on the Eastern coast of Great Britain, has the characteristic 'sound' that has become the trademark of English Psychobilly bands: Fast and furious with a stand up bass, of course. The thing that's neat about this combo is that they focus less on the 'Psycho' and more on the 'Billy' aspect of their tunes without losing any of the edge.
The disc as a whole is very consistent. The tracks are all more than adequate with a few gems shining through. Here's a play by play on my favourite tracks.
'Baby please don't go', which is actually one of the couple of covers on this disc, remains pretty faithful to Them's remake of the classic blues tune-full of Nervous energy. The following cut, 'Edge on you', comes out of its corner swingin' hard like there's no tomorrow, and the stand up bass is featured nicely on this mix. The guitar lick on 'Modern Romance' reminded me of the Stray Cats' version of 'Jeannie, Jeannie, Jeannie'. Another cover is 'Radar Love' (originally done by Golden Earring). In my opinion this 'blues fortified' version kicks the crap out of the original by a country mile. The yelpin' and squealin' on the intro to 'Just can't take it' gives an indication of what the rest of the tune is going to be like: This one's a pedal-to-the-metal stomper that doesn't disappoint. 'New Girlfriend' is another tune where the double bass really gets to stand out; lyrically it's a great song as well.
The high point on this disc is the band's treatment of Chuck Berry's 'Memphis': I must've listened to this track at least half a dozen times. On this cut, guitar player Mark Harman really gets to blow some chops; the track features Steel/slide guitar throughout its entirety and of course, there's slap bass galore. The 'Megaphone' effect on Harman's vocals on the first verse really sits in with the whole 'telephonic' theme of the song.
At this point during my listening session, I found myself focusing more and more on the whole listening experience instead of overanalysing the disc. This stuff isn't real cerebral - it's just good Rock 'n' Roll - as rockin' as it can get.
Why hasn't the US heard of these Cats? I'd love to someday see these guys live. The only thing that I found lacking with this disc is that there were no liner notes of any kind.
Apparently, Restless have gone through several personnel changes, so it would've been nice to be able to match their names to the cut on which they're playing. The current incarnation of Restless consists of Mark Harman on Guitar/Vocals, Paul Harman on Stand-up Bass and Ben Cooper on Drums. In closing, I highly recommend this release..." String King 1997
