Bo Weavil Blues Band
The band themselves are actually from France, which as the booklet rightly says isn't exactly a hotbed for Mississippi delta Blues, yet they certainly sound as though they grew up on it. Imagine Howlin' Wolf with a very subtle French accent. These recordings sound really authentic, but without sounding crap if you get my drift. A perfect balance between roots respect and sonic integrity. Deathrow Database #35
Howling Wolf meets Mercy Baby. Elmore James dukes it out with Little Walter. Jimmy Rogers and Robert Nighthawk. Sonny Boy Williamson meets... well... one of the other Sonny Boys. The Bo Weavil Blues Band may well come from France (not usually known as a hot bed for Mississippi delta blues) but when you hear them, you're transported to the south with poverty, segregation, Jim Crow and fish house functions. Days spent in toil over cotton, nights tapping the rotting floorboards in some moonshine soaked flop house. The spirits of the above blues legends seep through this blues band, with a large dollop of John Lee Hooker at his Von Battle best. And like all the great blues men, all the songs are original compositions, albiet a variance on a well-worn theme. If you're a fan of the guys above and like your music down and dirty, this is the record that'll be permanently glued to your turntable. It's Downhome blues bop at its best. Since starting out four years ago, they've travelled all over Europe (with the exception to the UK, which will be put right by their forthcoming appearance at the Rhythm Riot in 1999) and turned audiences into fans in the space of a set or two. With this recording in your hands, you're about to become firm fans too !!! It's a funny thing, but I've just latched on to something here. Since it seems every band wants to be 'authentic' these days, but very few actually 'originals' in their approach, (just mere copyists sounding the same as the next band) it strikes me as more than just coincidence that this band and Don Cavalli (the BEST and the most ORIGINAL Rock-A-Billy band EVER !!!) both (a) come from France and more importantly... (b) both appear under the Lenox Records company banner." Poukie
