The ballads - Good Rockin' Tonight

This is the eleventh CD from the UK's top Rock'n'Roll outfit, Good Rockin' Tonight, and is part of their Tenth Anniversary series. The Ballads is, as the title claims, twenty-one smoochers with a wide variety of styles for those romantic moments. The Ballads contains a large selection of Elvis numbers such as 'That's When Your Heartaches Begin', 'Don't' and 'I Just Can't Help Believing'. Other quality numbers include Hank Williams' 'You Win Again', Kriss Kristofferson's 'Help Me Make It Through The Night' and Santo and Johnny's 'Sleepwalk'. As well as these choice cover versions, there are several original numbers from the pen of the dynamic Mark Keeley. The authentic sounding doo-wop style of 'Don't Wanna Lose You', 'I'm Falling In Love Tonight' and 'You Should Have Seen Her', a number which is regularly included in their live set. This latest offering from Good Rockin' Tonight shares the same high quality as their previous releases, in sound and sleeve design. So if you're feeling romantic, sentimental or blue, this is a perfect addition to your Good Rockin' Tonight collection.

"Somehow, with a release number of GRT5, this seems to have escaped the net in terms of a review in NDT. Never mind, better late than never, but it's ironic that for all the Good Rockin' Tonight albums I've reviewed (and all of them complimentary), this is my favourite of all, It isn't any better, because all of this band's releases are as accomplished as the others, it's just that I like this the best, It's full of teen ballads from the '50s, a couple of later items and one new song in particular that has really got under my skin ... but more of that later.
For starters, let's look at the covers. The good thing about Good Rockin' Tonight and cover versions is that you don't feel as if you're going to cringe before you actually hear their renditions. You are relaxed in the knowledge that their interpretation is going to be respectful and tasteful, but most of all it will have captured the original feeling. That is down to many factors, the main ingredients being Mark Keeley's incredible voice, the band's exceptional musical ability and, topping the Jot, their determination to get everything just right. Beginning with a superb performance of Troy Shondell's 'This Time', they continue to delight with terrific versions of many songs associated with Elvis, including 'Loving You', 'I'll Never Let You Go (Little Darlin')', 'Blue Moon', 'Don't' and 'Harbour Lights'. Elsewhere, we get The Crests' 'Sixteen Candles', Santo & Johnny's 'Sleepwalk' and Buddy Holly's 'True Love Ways'. There's also Hank Williams' classic 'You Win Again', moulded perfectly into teen ballad material, and even Kris Kristofferson's 'Help Me Make it Through The Night', included as a request from fan Mike Robinson.
As good as all these may be, the three original numbers (all written by Mark Keeley) are quite superb and all stand out. 'Don't Wanna Lose You' is a great doo-wop and 'I'm Falling In Love Tonight' reminds me of The Platters' 'The Great Pretender'. But it's 'You Should Have Seen Her' that has sent me into raptures. (Oh shit, here he goes... - Ed.) I'm in love with the girl..... I'm heartbroken because she's left me... I feel every emotion the song requires of me ... just like all of those old '50s teen ballads. You just can't beat them and you'd have to go a long way before you could beat Good Rockin' Tonight!"
