The Coffin Nails
Humungus and the boys rock it up again in that Coffin Nails style. This is said to be the best Coffin Nails album ever (Mental Hell, Germany). It is in places darker and faster than ever before, whilst keeping the touches of humour that the band has become synonymous with. The Coffin Nails have combined their old-school psychobilly roots with contemporary influences to give a wonderfully fresh-sounding album full of future anthems. Pedal steel guitar by Gerry Hogan (of Albert Lee's band) lends authenticity to the country song 'Bigfishality' which has a Vandals style punk twist.
"Good ol' Coffin Nails… unlike the cancelled U.S. appearance that was supposed to occur this month, this new CD doesn't disappoint. Although, like most recordings really, it has its ups and downs. The majority of the tracks are pure Coffin Nails style and sound, and the ones that aren't are just sort of generic tunes with funny lyrics. But let's concentrate on the good because majority rules. The style and sound I refer to is simple, clean and pure with an assortment of lyrical themes that are always entertaining and catchy. My favorite songs on Hard as Nails are 'Scared of the Dark' for its mixed vocals of Humungus and MadMan, 'Forbidden Love' for being such a sweet little western ballad, and the title track 'Hard as Nails' for its change-ups, intro and melodic guitar. All in all (even with those generic sorta tunes I mentioned in the mix) the CD is alive with variety and hard to take out of the player." www.horrorpsycho.com
