Narvel Felts - at Rollin' Rock

'Narvel Felts at Rollin' Rock' consists of a mixture of frantic rockers, mid-tempo swingers and slow R&B style ballads. 'If I didn't have you', 'Lonely hours', 'Jealousy' and 'Convicted' are ballads in the typical Narvel Felts style showcasing his tremendous vocal range. The rockers include a wild version of Conway Twitty's 'Shake it up', his own 'Tally ho', Larry Donn's 'Honey Bun' and Ronnie Dove's 'Lover Boy'. If you expect to hear the authentic Sun Records sound on Slim Rhodes' 'Do what I do', you are in for a pleasant surprise. Instead of copying the almost acoustic feel of Rhodes' Sun release, Ronny and Narvel opted for a refreshing rock and roll treatment of the Sun classic. For a complete throwback to Sun Records try 'Rollin' out of Memphis' which runs for almost four minutes, features a solid slappin' bass, great pickin' and includes some of the best 'wails' since Elvis recorded 'Mystery train' for Sam Phillips. The overall production is typical Rollin' Rock with shades of Ray Campi showing through, even though Ray is not present on these recordings.

Narvel Felts, Narvel the Marvel

Narvel Felts was born November 11, 1938 in Keiser, Arkansas and raised in Bernie, Missouri. His first guitar, which was held together with wire, was aquired by trading his BB-gun for it. Working the cotton fields, Narvel Felts saved $15 to purchase his second guitar. He won a talent contest in his high school singing Carl Perkins' 'Blue Suede Shoes'. A local DJ was present and Narvel Felts shortly thereafter heard his name on the radio as the DJ said, "If Narvel Felts is listening, please contact KDEX immediately". Narvel Felts ran into the house to tell his father and they drove to a telephone eight miles away to call the station where Narvel got his break. Roy Orbison got Narvel Felts his first recording deal with Sun Records. He's never stopped singing since and in 41 years has only missed four shows; three were due to a case of laryngitis and one for the funeral of his son, Bub. His hits are numerous, his fans are countless, his never ending talent priceless. Above all, Narvel Felts is a man of faith and integrity. The man and his music are alive and well and still going strong.
