The River Boys
The River Boys have been around since the early 1980's, and this is only their third album. This is one rockabilly trio that doesn't always wear the almost obligatory bowling shirts. They sometimes prefer to flex their muscles in mean black t-shirt garb, complete with band logo. Up front and sporting the familiar Gretsch guitar is the imposingly big figure of their main man. His spiky quiff haircut can't hide the fact that he's obviously been around a few years. With his face more often in a grimace than a smile, it's only the Buddy Holly glasses that slightly soften his features. Occasionally he announces what's coming next, but just as often he clangs out a power chord or two to reassure himself his guitar is loud enough before driving into a rumbling riff. The bass player and drummer glance at each other and then join in. The drummer is another grizzled veteran, but belying his years with died blonde flat top. The muscles in his arms look like knotted hawsers, but the rest of him is more skeletal, including a vaguely grim visage. His sticks style is Stray Cats minimalist and very effective. Slapping steadily at the double bass is the youngest looking member of the band. Not so tall as the others, but looking every bit the neo-rockabilly dude, he combines with the drums to contribute a deep and solid platform for the guitar.
