Dave Phillips And The Hot Rod Gang

Wow! Mark Harman was replaced in Dave Phillips and the Hot Rod Gang by Darrel Higham for this special recording. You even get bits of the studio chat here. Great Neo-Rockabilly. Dave Phillips had been an original member of the Blue Cat Trio, leaving in 1980 (the remnants of The Blue Cat Trio merged with elements of Little Tony & The Tennessee Rebels to become the Blue Cats) to form The Hot Rod Gang and made the seminal 'Wild youth' album for Rockhouse with Mark Harman on guitar. This was the album that contained 'Tainted love', often attributed to Soft Cell, but in fact originally a Northen Soul record by Gloria Jones, the wife of Marc Bolan. Soft Cell's version was a cover version - OK? Anyway, to get back to this record - it's an attempt to capture the spirit of 'Tainted love' and goes a long way towards it. It has to be remembered that quite a few years had passed and Dave Phillips had absorbed a lot more musical influences and dubious chemicals in the meantime! However, the other songs here show that Dave Phillips had NOT lost his love of Gene Vincent's records.
