The Metrotones

The Metrotones are well named. Coming from London and its vicinity they can claim to be the 'tones of the metropolis'. The Metrotones also join that line of vocal groups who allegedly sang on street corners in the 1950's. There are a whole series of 'family' groups named after birds, cars, towns, even gems and thus The Metrotones continue in the tradition of The Cleftones, The Harptones, The Monotones and The Velvetones. However, The Metrotones do have their own sound and style.

In 2003, 'Slow down Donna Lee' became something of a 'club hit'.

The Metrotones

"The Metrotones are Britain's top doo-wop vocal group. They first appeared live at London's Town And Country Club 2 on January 16th 1991. The nine piece line-up consists of Dave Tonner (lead vocals), Jon Pannaman (1st tenor vocals), Paul Solomons (2nd tenor vocals), Den Hegarty (bass vocals), lan Finlay (guitar), Paul Hopton (piano), John Dobinson (saxophone), Harry McNaughton (double bass) and Jon Wood (drums).
The Metrotones have appeared on numerous TV shows, including 'After The News' for TVS, and 'An American Affair' for Carlton TV. The Metrotones are also featured in a book which accompanies the latter. The band was also to be seen backing Lewis Lymon & the Teenagers in the BBC production 'The Biz'.
As well as receiving national and international airplay, The Metrotones have appeared live on Capital Gold, Greater London Radio, BBC Midlands Radio, Blue Moonshine Radio (Switzerland), and they have recorded jingles for Capital Gold, GLR, Raiders FM and Blue Moonshine.
The Metrotones have appeared with many great artists, including from America Fats Domino ('Blueberry Hill'), The Teenagers ('Why Do Fools Fall In Love'), The Belmonts ('Teenager In Love'), The Spaniels ('Goodnight Sweetheart'), The Cleftones ('Heart and Soul'), The Blue Caps ('Be-bop-a-lula'), Bill Haley's Comets ('Rock Around the Clock'), Bobby Lewis ('Tossin' and Turnin') and many more. The instrumentalists have also backed many of these artists at Hemsby, Europe's premier Rock'n'Roll festival.
The Metrotones have built up a large, international following. They have a substantial mailing list as well as their own fan club in Spain. Much of the band's popularity is due to their exciting live show. With bright, matching suits and wild choreography, they are (as described by John Stafford in 'Now Dig This' magazine) 'as visually exciting as they are vocally excellent'.
