Another compilation of 'Alternative Country'. It's Americana without the 'glitz'.

"Let those trumpets play 'hail', because what we've got here, is volume three of a series that once will appear to be 'world-class compilation'. To put it in a simple way: there's absolutely nothing better than this series to get to know what's happening on the Americana-side of life. Once again, the good people at Sweden's Dusty Records have managed to put some well known names alongside totally new ones. Most of the artists here are Americans, although there are also English (Power of Ten, Wild Bob Burgos & His Houserockers) and Swedish (Enzendoh and Hanif). Once again, this disc is fun from track 1 to 19. All of the songs are previously unreleased and you'll find bands such as 'Louie Ortega & the Wild Jalapenos', 'The Barn Burners', 'Chaz & the Motorbikes', 'The Lonesome Trailers' and 'The Boilers'. Nineteen bull's eyes, nineteen country and roots rock songs and all of this under what's becoming the trademark of the series: this cd is worth every Eurocent you spend." Dani Hayveart, Roots Town

"The third in the mucho popular Dusty Records series, this volume is head and shoulders the best of the lot, which is a promising sign that bodes well for future volumes. While the first two volumes were made up of primarily American artists, the Swedish label has decided to expand their self-imposed geographical boundaries and include three acts from Britain and two from Sweden. Whatever the country of origin of these artists, the common denominator is their devotion to country and roots music in all forms. While this can all be considered 'good-time' music, styles from roadhouse rock (Robert Jackson) to country swing (Louie Ortega and the Wild Juans) to folk-rock (Lonesome Trailers) and any other roots hybrid you can think of. Besides just getting a ton of enjoyment from listening to this as a CD unto itself, you can use this handy compilation as a way to direct your hard-earned money. Contact info is included for all of the artists and anyone liking a song or two can surely get in touch with the artists and buy more music from them. The country scene has grown exponentially worldwide over the past ten years and it is because of great bands like these and record labels like Dusty that have built this scene and nurtured it. Great work and great music from all concerned. Can't wait for the next one!" Scott Homewood, Americana UK

"This is the third instalment of a series of compilation CDs put out by record store 'Country Rock Specialisten' in Gothenburg Sweden. It is released on their own label 'Dusty Records', and the format is slowly gaining a reputation for itself, the last volume managing to reach number 37 in No Depression's top 40 chart. This volume features previously unreleased tracks by 19 artists, mainly American, but for the first time in the series they have included three British and two Swedish artists in the list. On the whole there is quite a nice variety of country rock styles covered here, something for almost everyone. For the purpose of giving you a taste of what to expect please forgive me if I indulge in a spot of comparison making.
Of the more rock orientated tracks we have: James Rider & the 420 Turnaround's 'Hit the Highway', a really classy guitar driven, country rock track, The Barn Burners fill the gap left by the Georgia Satellites very nicely on 'Walk with you baby' and Robert Jackson's searing 'Gone with the wind' comes complete with sublime electric slide &endash; Southern style. On Loie Ortega and the Wild Juans (yes, say that again slowly, 'Wild JUANS'!) we get a demonstration of some fine Western Swing sounds, very much in the style of Asleep At The Wheel. Of the non U.S. representations here Swedish band Enzendoah's jangling guitar take on their 'Rain, rain, rain' is one of the standout tracks on the disc. Coincidently, the other Swedish act on the disc Hanif also come across with a very McGuinn/Byrdsian sound too. UK band Power of Ten deliver 'Walk on by' sounding like Gram Parsons backed by Status Quo and the Mavericks! What else do we have? Chaz and the Motorbikes; letting rip with Bakersfield honky tonk in a similar vein to The Derailers, The Parlor Dogs performing 'The great beyond' in a smooth and laid back manner not dissimilar to Poco, and The Mary Janes bearing a similarity to Cowboy Junkies, though lacking the haunting vocals of the wonderful Margo Timmins.
As with any compilation there are bound to be inconsistencies, and there are even some tracks on here that may ideally have been left off, specifically I'm referring to Big Al's appalling 'Buster the line dancin' dog' (I kid you not!). Coming complete with cheesy electronic handclaps, this is the kind of nonsense that puts the hard won credibility of country music back 30 years!
The best of the bunch is probably: The Lonesome Trailers' 'We Stone Prophets (in our hometown)'. Reminiscent of Slaid Cleaves, the song deals with the struggles and frustrations of a young musician to gain acceptance within a small community. The whole disc is very neatly rounded off by the Trash Mavericks brilliant 'Tattletail' a barnstorming rock'n'roller that brings the whole show to a damn fine close.
This is an intelligently compiled disc that will provide for almost everyone who has an interest to find something to like, though I don't know anyone that Big Al will appeal to! It is a great place to start if you're looking for something a bit off the beaten track, but within the boundaries of country rock and Americana. Websites addresses are given for most bands and previous releases are also listed if you wish to follow their paths any further." Doug Floyd, Alt-country.
