Flying Saucers - Sandy Ford
Sandy Ford and the Flying Saucers are rock and roll royalty. True professionals. They are - THE REAL THING. They are not just musicians who play rock and roll music. They believe in rock and roll - they LIVE rock and roll and it SHOWS. Sandy Ford remains the only songwriter whose writing and performances can fool me into thinking that his own compositions are old classics and that old classics are his own compositions. There are no seams in Sandy's work, it's all one. If you buy this album, you will be checking the writer credits as I did. This 28 track album - yes 28 tracks!!! - consists of remastered previously unreleased versions. The journey through this album starts with 'some like it hot', an anthemic rock and roll flag-waver of a song. Uptempo rock and roll at its best. Then come some of those tracks I mentioned earlier, 'Head on down' and 'bye, bye, baby', are not old classics - Sandy wrote them - they are new classics! I was concerned when I saw 'unchained melody' listed. But there was no need to be, it's a good interpretation, more Vincent than Righteous Brothers, thankfully. 'Bring my baby back' is another Sandy track, but you will swear it's Johnny Burnette. But don't think Sandy is a copyist, he isn't. Sandy Ford sounds like Sandy Ford, but like I said, there's no seams. Classic, contemporary, Vincent, Burnette, hillbilly, rockabilly, ballad, rock and roll etc, it's all part of Sandy and the Flying Saucers. Track 15, 'Honey hush' IS a Johnny Burnette track and it stands up as the best cover of the song I have ever heard. 'Bop-a-lena' needs no introduction to rock and roll fans, it sums up the good times! As an aside, I once saw KD Lang doing a good version of 'bop-a-lena'! Back to the matter in hand. 20 of the 28 tracks are Sandy's own compositions. 'Rock with me baby' is a saxaphonic, sharp guitared bopper. 'Wedding of love' an uptempo hillbillyesque track with a haunting vocal and a mystery train rythym. 'Love me like you did last night' has a bitter-sweet feel and a nice chord pattern and key change. I could talk about this album endlessly, but I won't. Is there anything bad about the album? Just the title track, funny enough. But then I have never heard a good tribute song, unless 'groove baby groove' counts. Sandy Ford isn't a bit part actor, he's the lead. Buy this and get rocked up!!! Billy (Scotland)
There's also a myspace page for 'flyingsaucerrockin', but this is NOTHING to do with the band, and Sandy doesn't even know who has made it! There is no official website for the band at this time.
