Demented Are Go - Satan's Rejects

Dateline: 2001 - Location: USA. The United Kingdom's Demented Are Go hold the current title as most notorious band to be playing the Rumble. They are known for their songs about murder, cross-dressing, paedophilia and fetishistic sex, and their live show uses "loads of blood, synthetic flesh, latex and anything else we can find, the fresher the better", according to vocalist Spark Retard. He has even been known to engage in sexual acts on stage with a vacuum cleaner, a fish and a slab of cheese.
Their drummer, Anton the Impaler, describes their sound as "the sonic equivalent of a '70s splatter movie. From '50s grindhouse rock'n'roll love songs to acid-soaked '60s garage and ending up somewhere in drag-punk heaven", all with a stand-up bass! When asked if they have something special planned for the Halloween event, guitarist Stan the Man replies, "It's a surprise". Demented Are Go pay tribute to horror with some of their album and song titles: 'The Day the Earth Spat Blood', 'Beast in the Cellar', 'House of Blood' and 'Love Seeps Like a Festering Sore', to name just a few. Their favorites include TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 and Fulci and Romero zombie movies.

Sadly, Demented Are Go failed to play at the Rumble, and the reason is a story all of its own. Suffice to say that Sparky got locked up....

"26 track collection of the most bloodcurdling psychobilly courtesy of the UK's legendary Demented Are Go! Along with the Meteors (also UK bred), these two bands are probably the biggest, most copied and most respected bands from the genre. And while the Meteors proudly proclaim that 'only the Meteors are pure psychobilly', it is indeed Demented Are Go! who are the undisputed kings of this mutant form of punked up/screwed up rockabilly.
Formed in around 1982, the history of Demented Are Go! is filled with myth and infamy. Notorious for outrageous stage antics (such as dressing up as hacked-up corpses or characters from their favorite horror movies, supposed on stage sex with vacuum cleaners, etc), singer Sparky's on and offstage antics and arrests (he was charged for pinching a 16 year old girl's behind and ended up in jail for a month on molestation charges!) numerous break-ups, line-ups, mental instability and drugs - it's amazing the band is even around to this day. But behind all the hoopla, the band also wrote some amazing songs. This retrospective album does a great job of culling together around 15 years' worth of mayhem and serves as a great introduction to one of England's sickest exports.
All the classics are here: the sinister psycho riff-fest 'Satan's Rejects', the gooey 'Love Sleeps Like a Festering Sore', the piece de resistance 'Red River Bloody Staircase' and the just messed up and completely wrong '(Who Put) Grandma Under the Stairs'. Also included are other gems like 'Brand New Corpse', 'Busted Hymen', 'Queen of Disease', 'Skitzoid Brain' and their ironic cover of Gene Vincent's 'Be Bop A Lula' ('I can't imagine the girl that would wanna be these guys' baby'). Listening to this collection, you have to wonder that maybe those people were on to something when they were trying to ban Elvis and rock'n'roll in the 50's. Though I don't think they ever thought it would go this far.
This is as good as psychobilly gets.
