Rocket 350
"Rocket 350 sports an Elvis-tinged swagger and cranks out high speed rockabilly with a deep southern feel. Raised on a diet of Eddie Cochran, Gene Vincent and Johnny Burnette records, Rocket 350 can keep the music traditional while giving it a twist all their own. Harder rocking and more true to form than contemporaries like the Stray Cats and High Noon, Rocket 350 infuse their own blend of four on the floor drums, breakneck slap bass and scorching guitar heroics with an earnestness and power all their own. Forget about what you've heard about Reverend Horton Heat, Rocket 350 is the real psychobilly freakout. Rocket 350 lives and breathes in Athens, Georgia, where they can be found rocking out at the 40 watt club or tearing it up at the Georgia Theater. Rocket 350 also spends a lot of time touring the southeast while keeping regular shows at The Star bar in Atlanta, Georgia and The Velvet Elvis in Savannah, Georgia. Rocket 350 has played with such legends as The King of Surf Rock, Dick Dale, and Lee Rocker of the Stray Cats. They have supported many national acts such as Kim Lenz and her Jaguars, The Amazing Crowns, The Racketeers, The Hillbilly Hellcats, Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs, The Twistin' Tarantulas, Seven Foot Politic, Dem Brooklyn Bums, Cigar Store Indians, Hifi and the Roadburners and The Frantic Flattops. Rocket 350 consists of front man 'Rocket' Phil Stair on guitar and vocals, 'Loverboy' Brandon Davis on the upright bass, and 'Twistin' Tony Dinneweth on drums. Georgia native Phil Stair has always been intrigued with rockabilly music as well as good old fashioned Rock'n'Roll. After an extensive search for musicians who shared his interests, Stair was contacted by Davis, formerly with The Slippin' Slacks of Rochester, NY. Together Phil and Brandon began laying down the foundation for Rocket 350. After a year of experimenting with various drummers, Rocket 350 discovered Tony Dinneweth and the band finally solidified. In the town of Athens, Georgia, where Rock'n'Roll is just a memory, Rocket 350 bursts through town at two hundred miles an hour. With flames pouring out of the exhaust and Elvis Presley blaring on the radio, Rocket 350 is ready to blast into any club across the United States and blow the roof off the joint. Put the children to bed, put on your rockin' shoes, and get ready to Rock'n'Roll all night long." From band website - www.rocket350.com
"Hell yes! This disc starts off with 'That's Life', a song that not only absolutely rocks and has a great tune, but it is delivered with more emotion and soul than Bob Hope has liver spots. I get goose bumps when I hear it; it is just that good. Other brilliant songs include 'Six Gun', which has an excellent Western/Spanish sound to it, while 'Seven Days' has a very punk rock feel. There is also the Link Wray inspired instrumental 'Wray Street', which is fantastic. Elsewhere 'Drinking Again' takes some of the melody of Hank Williams Sr.'s 'Move It On Over', injects it with rockabilly fervor, and turns it into a bastardized alcoholic anthem that'll have you staggering to the jukebox with another quarter. Other outstanding tracks are 'Purr Kitty Purr', 'Faster' and 'Voo Doo'. The last unlabeled track is very surreal and euphoric, kind of like what they'd play in a Coen Brother's movie after some greaser wrecks his car and is floating through a subconscious stream of bliss just before being catapulted back into reality. In my opinion Rocket 350 are one of the best rockabilly bands out there today, and you'd do yourself a great disservice not to pick this up." BL - Rock'n'roll Purgatory
