Okeh Wranglers - Tearing up the old dancehall

This album takes the form, musically and photographically, of a sketch of the Okeh Wranglers 1999 mini-tour of Texas and Tennessee. Photographer Ainsley Adams captures live performances at the Continental Club and Exit/In amongst others.
The Kyme Family (Peter, Sheila and their daughters Christine, Louise and Irene and son Pete jnr.) from the UK, release on their own Bluesmoke label twelve tracks of roots country music, including two covers: an uptempo rework of the the Jim Reeves classic, 'Heartbreaking Baby', and a live radio broadcast of 'Deed I Do'. The rest of the material is penned by father Peter including the band's current show closer: 'Let's Get Hot Tonight' and 'Torn Between Love And Hate'.

"Since I first heard them on CMR radio a few years ago, I have been a fan of this Southampton based family band the Okeh Wranglers. Their music follows the rockabilly styles of 1950’s masters such as Carl Perkins; acoustic rhythm guitar and bass, add to this country fiddle, accordion, steel guitar and a second lead guitar, and you get an exciting brand of rootsy country/rockabilly honky tonk inspired music. With dad (Pete) on guitar, Mum (Sheila) on upright, daughters Louise on accordian and vocals, Irene on steel guitar, Christine on vocals, lead guitar and fiddle, and son (Pete jr.) on drums. A real family band.
Their live set is a mix of material ranging from Hank Williams to Peggy Lee - along with plenty of solid original material too. Now I have received a new CD Tearing Up The Old Dancehall - twelve tracks, ten Kyme originals, mostly recorded around 1997 - 1999 although I cannot see any released on their earlier albums. A mix of styles opening with an instrumental track, 'Song Of The Painted Desert', showing the band's playing talent, 'Torn Between Love and Hate', with Christine and Louise's nice harmonies and then Dad takes over on 'Ain't Gonna Be No Plaything Anymore', with Christine again on lead guitar. If you enjoy Wayne Hancock or BR549 you'll love the Okeh Wranglers and they were playing this music long before BR5-49 hit the UK. 'Too Cool' takes the mood way down in a nice blues/jazz number with Peter playing some nice acoustic guitar then the tempo rises again for 'Let's Get Hot Tonight', which really rocks along. Finally we are really brought down with Pete closing on Blues On My Mind - just Pete's mournful voice and his guitar with double bass - a wonderful track." Iain Dobie
