Tommy Sands
Tommy Sands was a very popular singer and actor in the late fifties. His biggest hit reached as high as number two on the US pop charts.Raised in Shreveport, Lousiana, Tommy Sands had a love for music at a very early age. After receiving a guitar for Christmas, at age seven, he taught himself to play. The next year, now only eight years old, he got a job at KWKH radio in Shreveport, performing twice a week.
His first record for Freedom Records was released in 1951 and within a year he was under contract with the notorious Colonel Tom Parker. With the Colonel's management, he signed with RCA where he recorded seven songs between 1953-55. Up to this time, Tommy Sands as a performer was a blend of hillbilly and delta blues. But, as he was growing into a teenager that blend soon took on a life of its own .. first Rock-a-billy, then Rock'n'roll!
1957 was a breakthrough year for Tommy Sands. Early that year he was given the title role in a televison play called 'The Singing Idol'. He had what would prove to be his biggest hit ever with 'Teen-Age Crush' from that show; it went to number two and made him a very popular figure. In April, while still a teenager, he was featured on the televison show 'This Is Your Life'. He signed with Capitol Records and continued to record songs; his cover of Faron Young's 1953 country hit 'Goin' Steady' began to climb the charts. Tommy Sands, star of The Singing Idol, had become a singing idol.
