The Light Crust Doughboys

"Former lead guitar player of the instrumental group The Ventures, Nokie Edwards and steel guitar legend Tom Brumley join, literally, the first group in Western Swing, The Light Crust Doughboys for this very interesting new instrumental album of 13 classic tunes. The current Light Crust Doughboys heard on this album are octogenarian Marvin 'Smokey' Montgomery on banjo, acoustic guitar and vibes. Marvin has been with the group for six and a half decades. Jerry Elliott adds his electric guitar to Nokie's lead guitar. Bill Simmons is on keyboards and the twin fiddles are John Walden and Jim Baker. Art Greenhaw is heard on electric bass and electric guitar and co-produced this album along with Smokey.
The album opens with a Western Swing rendition of Fats Domino's I'm Walkin' and closes with the old favorite Orange Blossom Special. In between there is a visit to the country music world for the Ray Winkler/Johnny Hathcock composition and both Jim Reeves and Eddy Arnold hit Welcome To My World. Other country classics include the Hank Snow hit A Fool Such As I, Lawton Williams' Fraulein from the late Bobby Helms and Your Cheatin' Heart from both Hank Williams (country) and Joni James (pop.) Bob Nolan's Tumbling Tumbleweeds from the Sons Of The Pioneers is given the unique treatment by these music legends as is the Leon Payne masterpiece I Love You Because from both Leon and pop music's Eddie Fisher. Another old favorite redone is Beer Barrel Polka. A nice job is done on Amarillo By Morning from the George Strait library. One of Tom Brumley's former employers, Ricky Nelson is remembered with Lonesome Town and the great Bob Wills is saluted with Faded Love. Another Western Swing classic is the late Leon McAuliffe's Panhandle Rag." from press release

"Nokie Edwards of The Ventures set the all-time standard for guitar melody and tone...As VINTAGE GUITAR mag said of this release, it doesn't get any better than this! The Light Crust Doughboys and super producer and Ventures protege Art Greenhaw turn in gorgeous instrumental performances of well-known country classics. This is the perfect CD for listening or cruising... Real, authentic Americana music by musicians who know exactly what they're doing! A must-have recording for any student of electic guitar, steel guitar, western swing, and cowboy jazz. The Light Crust Doughboys are probably the world's longest-running country band, having been founded by Bob Wills in 1931 in Fort Worth, Texas." A.M.F., USA
